Orange’s Global Consumer Cloud runs on Scality storage
Director Data & Services API, Orange
Orange supports millions of global users with its Scality-powered consumer storage cloud.
Philippe and his team gained a level of control that allowed them to roll out new services on top of the RING infrastructure without having to worry about adding additional storage. That was easily and seamlessly done.

Taking a picture of your son and knowing that it is instantly backed up, with no chance of it getting lost. Receiving the video from your wife’s reaction as she saw that picture on her phone just after you took it. Coming home after a long day at work to a door opening automatically before you, beckoning you into the warm house. Being alerted that your washing machine over owed (again) but that the house system has already stopped the machine and shut the water valve to limit the damage.
Employing usage data to optimize the energy use of appliances and your house in general as well as use electricity when it is cheapest. Leveraging weather data and sensor information and run sprinklers to minimize water usage while keeping your garden in pristine condition. Learn usage criteria of your house to heat rooms when in use and lower the heat when not, all preemptively. Enable you to let friends in to the house when you are running late.
From backing up date on your phones to providing instant sharing options for pictures, videos and other files, monitoring security to automating energy use at home, everything is connected. Orange aims to further its role in the center of your life. To do so, the company is pushing into services well beyond simple connectivity. When Philippe Moreaux and his team reviewed Orange’s existing infrastructure and service assets, they quickly realized that they had a problem catering to these fully integrated services.
Orange wanted to provide seamless data across all access options, from phones to set-top boxes, making all files, emails, messages and services available regardless of how a user would look at it. While they had a good idea of their short-term plans, they knew that the future would bring even more challenges for their infrastructure. Philippe knew that data formats would change, data amounts would quickly increase and APIs for accessing the data would morph rapidly. What Orange was looking for was an infrastructure that would allow them to pool all the data – from emails to personal drive to Internet-of-Things and more – and grow with the subscriber base and allow for lightning capacity growth. All at low cost. And with multiple, standard APIs. Preferably leveraging standard hardware and allowing for use of any new hardware developed.
Philippe and his team also gained a level of control that allowed them to roll out additional services on top of this new infrastructure without having to worry about adding additional storage – that was easily and seamlessly done. To date, Orange is already operating storage in the double-digit petabyte scale.
The capacity of the storage system is doubling in 2016 and its speed of growth is accelerating. Orange can now make the future come to life. With innovative services that cater to your needs.
Scality’s software-defined storage solution decouples the software layer from the hardware it manages.
Scality RING fully protects you against downtime. Which is to say, you won’t experience any. Ever.
Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it. Erasure coding insulates data from hardware failures. The result is a truly always-on, 24×7 operational system.
