Three Questions to
Ask An Object Storage Vendor

There’s a lot of noise out there. Sometimes it’s hard to navigate through it to get to what matters—what’s real. Don’t take what you hear at face value—look for proof points. Just scratching the surface can reveal the difference between a leader and a pretender.

Start by asking three simple questions.


Question 1: 

What do the top analyst firms, Gartner and IDC, report about your company and product?

To give you confidence in your selection, the top analyst firms Gartner and IDC have evaluated and ranked the object storage vendors on execution, vision, key criteria and use-cases that provide you with an independent validation. Since this will be a long-term investment and partnership, ask where your vendor stacks up on these analyst reports:

  • Are you a leader in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Distributed File Systems & Object Storage?
  • How do you rank in the 2018 Gartner Critical Capabilities for Object Storage? Top 3? Top 5?
  • What’s your position in IDC MarketScape?

Question 2: 

Is your vendor on the price lists of major OEM storage hardware vendors? How many?

Hardware vendors don’t take partnerships lightly. Rigorous testing, solid integration and a history of success precede inclusion in a hardware vendor’s portfolio. Have major storage hardware vendors HPE and Cisco selected your vendor as their object storage software vendor? Do they offer factory installation options and one-call support? Do they offer the integrated solution directly through their price lists globally?

Question 3: 

What percentage of your customer deployments are at petabyte-scale? Tens of petabytes?

Petabyte-scale challenges many storage solutions. Silos develop, in part, due to those challenges of scale, resulting in complexity and management headaches. Ensure that your vendor has a strong portfolio of multi-petabyte customers—and a proven ability to expand easily and seamlessly as those petabytes multiply over time. Ask your object storage vendor what percentage of their customer deployments are at petabyte-scale, and even tens of petabytes in scale?
